Entangled Shadows: Tracing Emotion, Loss, and Displacement
My practice begins not with the wire itself, but with its shadow. I trace the projected outlines of tangled wires—delicate, unruly lines cast by light onto paper or wall. These wires, often bent and overlapping, for me represent the emotional states that grief leaves behind: twisted, unresolved, difficult to hold. I do not untangle them. I do not correct them. I trace their shadows—ephemeral, imprecise—as a way to stay close to what cannot be fully understood.
This process emerged from a need to respond to personal loss, to adjust to a new life shaped by grief. Tracing these shadows is not illustrative; it is a somatic act, a form of processing. Each line becomes a path—sometimes repetitive, sometimes trembling—mapping the contours of sorrow, memory, and presence.
Over time, my practice has evolved into a kind of emotional cartography. I’ve found a kinship with the Situationist dérive, where movement through space is guided not by logic or utility, but by affect and encounter. Like the dérive, my tracings refuse the authority of the fixed map. They drift through memory, through inner landscapes of dislocation. The entangled wire, in its shadow form, becomes a compass for this inner wandering.
This approach opens a deeper question: Can such a practice offer something to others—especially those who have experienced displacement, grief, or rupture? I believe it can. Not as a solution, but as a shared process of staying with uncertainty. The act of tracing what is barely there—the fleeting contour of a shadow—asks us to slow down, to attend to what’s usually overlooked. It creates space not for answers, but for recognition.
In this way, tracing becomes a quiet offering. A gesture toward healing—not by resolving pain, but by giving it shape. By allowing others to see their own entanglements reflected, and to know they are not alone.
